Sermon on John 10:27-28
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ,
Gospel of John, chapter 10, verses 27 and 28: “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.”
27. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
28. And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
This passage is short, yet it speaks with a voice that reaches beyond time, resounding through every generation that has ever longed for truth, belonging, and life.
1. “My sheep hear my voice”
The first thing Jesus tells us is, “My sheep hear my voice.”
The voice of our Shepherd, the voice of Christ, speaks to each of us, quietly and persistently.
But are we truly listening?
Our lives are often filled with noise—voices of the world that entice us, distract us, or fill us with fear and anxiety.
Social Media (negative news )
It is easy to become overwhelmed by this noise, to feel lost or unsure of where to go or whom to follow.
Yet, in the depths of our hearts,
Christ’s voice can always be heard
if we make room for silence,
if we make room for prayer,
if we make room to receive Him.
This voice speaks through the teachings of the Church, through the Scriptures, and through the quiet whisper of the Holy Spirit within us.
Each time we gather for Divine Liturgy,
we hear the voice of Christ calling us to communion,
calling us to be one with Him and with each other.
The voice of Christ is the voice of love,
voice of mercy,
and voice of truth.
He does not compel; He invites and guides.
Let us ask ourselves: do we recognize His voice?
And if we hear it, do we respond with the love and devotion He asks of us?
2. “I know them, and they follow me”
Christ goes on to say, “I know them, and they follow me.”
What an incredible comfort it is to be known by the Lord, not merely as one in a crowd, but intimately, personally.
In our world, people often feel isolated or unseen,
but to Christ, no one is invisible.
He knows our joys and our sorrows,
our strengths and weaknesses,
our struggles and hopes.
The Lord knows each one of us by name.
He knows the unique challenges of our lives,
and He walks with us through them all.
When we allow ourselves to be known by Christ,
we find a peace and security that the world cannot give us.
To follow Him is to place our trust in the One who truly loves us,
in the One who has sacrificed everything for our salvation.
Following Christ means more than simply agreeing with His words;
it means putting them into action in our lives.
It means loving our neighbors,
forgiving those who wrong us,
helping those in need,
and living in humility and obedience.
It is not an easy path, but it is the path that leads us to life.
3. “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish”
Our Lord promises that those who follow Him will receive eternal life, and they shall never perish.
This is a promise that extends beyond the limitations of this earthly life.
In Christ, death is not the end,
but the doorway to eternal communion with God.
Through His resurrection, Christ has conquered death and has opened for us the gates of paradise.
Eternal life is not just a future hope;
it is a present reality for those who live in Christ.
When we abide in Him, we experience the beginnings of eternal life here and now.
In our prayers, in the sacraments, in our love for one another, we taste a small measure of the joy and peace that await us in the fullness of God’s kingdom.
To live with this awareness of eternal life transforms us.
It gives us courage in the face of trials,
patience in suffering,
and a heart filled with gratitude for the gifts of God.
This life, with all its beauty and pain, is a gift. But it is only the beginning of our journey.
4. “No one will snatch them out of my hand”
Finally, Jesus assures us, “No one will snatch them out of my hand.”
Here is the ultimate promise of protection and security.
We are in the hands of the Good Shepherd,
who will never abandon us.
He has claimed us as His own,
and no power on earth or in heaven can take us away from Him.
This does not mean that we will not face hardships or temptations.
It does not mean that we will never experience pain or loss.
But it does mean that even in our darkest moments, we are not alone.
The hand of Christ holds us firmly, guiding us, comforting us, and leading us home.
This assurance should fill our hearts with hope and peace.
Let us hold fast to our faith,
knowing that our Shepherd watches over us.
And let us strengthen one another,
for we are all members of His flock,
journeying together toward His kingdom.
In Conclusion
Beloved in Christ, as we meditate on these words from the Gospel of John,
let us renew our commitment to listening to the voice of our Shepherd,
to following Him faithfully,
and to trusting in His promises.
May we live with the confidence that
we are known and loved by God,
that we are called to eternal life,
and that we are safe in His hands.
May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with all of you. Amen.
